The Futures Working Group is dedicated to studying possible, probable, and preferable futures as they relate to the police, police organizations, and how crime and justice intersect in larger societies. Members of the FWG are a mix of current and retired law enforcement personnel (from local, state, and federal agencies), academics, members of the military, and those working in the private sector. Since the FWG was established in 2002, it has produced two dozen edited volumes and white papers examining emerging issues related with the future of crime, society, and policing. In addition, the members have given hundreds of presentations to policing and other audiences across the United States and around the world.

The FWG works to advance a broad understanding and appreciation of the value of futures thinking within policing, as well as developing publications and presentations addressing specific issues of emerging and future relevance to policing.

Specifically, the FWG seeks to:

  • advance an understanding of futures thinking and how it relates with effective leadership in policing.

  • advocate for the importance of futures thinking as a vital resource in the toolkit of effective leaders.

  • explore emerging and future trends that will have an impact on social, technological, environmental, economic, and political spheres.

  • create publications and presentations that bring futures thinking and perspectives on the future to policing audiences.
